an image Stephan grew up in Fort Worth, Texas. He played most competitive sports growing up, including basketball, soccer and baseball. Once in high school, Stephan focused solely on swimming. He eventually became a Texas Age Group Swimming champion, Southern Zone runner-up and earned All-State honors his junior and senior years in two different events.

Stephan attended Duke University, earning a degree in psychology and economics. He swam for the Blue Devils his freshman year, before shoulder injuries forced an early retirement.

Not long after moving back to Texas in 2007, Stephan began to rediscover his competitive fire. He ran his first 5k late in 2008. A close friend suggested triathlon, so Stephan bought his first bike not long after. He competed in his first (and thus far only) duathlon in February 2009 and first sprint triathlon in April 2009. Since then, he has competed in many triathlons up to the half iron distance, earning numerous age group wins.

This season, Stephan plans to focus on the Olympic distance. He will also cross off a bucket list race by competing in the Escape from Alcatraz triathlon in June.
